Holiday Menu Part One
The Holidays are here and all of us are trying to balance our dietary and health concerns.I recently began giving out my favorite recipe for barbeque salmon as a heart and cardiovascular healthy alternative. The secret is in the preparation and a new study has demonstrated that broiled fish is more heart healthy than fried fish. The study suggests salmon, sardines, tuna, halibut and mackerel as the best sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. Broiled or barbequed, it's all good !!!

Exercise, Green Tea and Bone Density

I hope you are beginning to see a common theme in my blog posts. Quality of life depends on diet, exercise and a healthy state of mind. Meditation is now cutting edge health care. This week we find that even brief training in mindfulness meditation improves our ability to manage pain. Mindfulness meditation is one of the forms of meditation that I teach in my practice. I'm often told by patients that their mind tends to wander when they try to meditate so I have developed a two step process to address this issue that works very well.

Earlier this year we learned that black tea has fantastic cardiovascular benefits and now news comes out that green tea extract may be a powerful tool in the fight against oral cancer.

Every day I counsel people, especially women about the need to engage in regular weight bearing exercise to maintain bone density. Previously it wasn't clear if it was possible to improve bone density in individuals over the age of 50. A new study has demonstated that high impact exercise improves bone density in people aged 50-93! Fantastic news! If you are already actively involved in impact types of sports keep it up! If not you should begin to do so however it is important to be careful of your joint health as impact types of exercise can traumatize joints particularly in the feet, ankles, knees, low back and hips. Smile and raise your hand if you're a fan of the Nintendo Wii !! I love the Nintendo Wii and Wii Resort Sports is my favorite, it's remarkable that you can be out of breath and work up a sweat using a video game. The games are exciting and fun. You can play alone against the computer or have fun playing with a friend. Researchers have found that a program of Wii exercise is just about equal to a traditional moderate intensity exercise program. Playing Wii is a valuable substitute for going out of doors or going to the gym for weight bearing exercise.
